Menangle virus caused a single episode of reproductive disease in pigs in a large piggery near Sydney in 1997. Bats from a nearby colony were also antibody-positive for Menangle virus. A sero-survey of pteropodids in far north Qld also found evidence of exposure to this virus. It is a member of the paramyxovirus family of viruses, and is closely related to another virus isolated in 1999 from fruit bats in Malaysia, Tioman virus.
