R Woods 18/02/2009 Myxomatosis was introduced to the wild rabbit population in Australia in 1951 as a biological control agent. Initially, mortality was about 90%, but this dropped to around 40% in some populations of wild rabbits, due to a decrease in the virulence of the virus and an increase in resistance in the wild rabbit population.
