T Grillo 14/03/2010 30/03/2010 PhD x 2 Quantitative risk assessment of wildlife disease emergence across the EU (Edinburgh. UK) A major new EU project, WildTech, aims to develop a pan European wildlife disease surveillance system through the use of nucleic acid and serology arrays capable of screening large numbers of wildlife samples for hundreds of pathogens. Two associated PhD projects will focus on (1) the spatial and temporal statistical analyses of infections within EU wildlife communities and (2) Quantitative assessment of wildlife disease risk through simulation modeling of infection dynamics in EU host communities. The Think Tank aims to reconnect the Australian community to kangaroos in a sustainable landscape, promote the wellbeing of kangaroo populations, and explore non-lethal management methods. The position will have a strong research and policy focus and will require the ability to work both independently and in a team under the direction of a research advisory committee. Suitable candidates will need to have a demonstrated track record in integrating science and policy, and support the humane and non-lethal management of kangaroo populations. T Grillo 01/03/2010 American Association of Zoo Veterinarian – International Conference Scholarships AAZV’s International Committee is pleased to announce the International Conference Scholarship call for applications. The goal of the scholarship is to provide financial aid to zoo and wildlife veterinarians from foreign countries to attend the annual AAZV conference. Grants will usually be awarded in amounts ranging from $1,000-$2,000. The funds are made possible by the voluntary contributions of individual AAZV members, the public and fundraising efforts by AAZV / International Committee members. All international members are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants from developing countries with demonstrable financial needs and focused educational/ conservation goals.
