R Woods 18/02/2009 Australian is free from rinderpest. In 1923, there was an outbreak of rinderpest involving 28 herds near Fremantle in Western Australia. It originated in cattle transported on a ship from Derby, Western Australia. The ship was carrying infected pigs loaded as stores in an Asian port. The disease was quickly eradicated by slaughter of all susceptible livestock within a mile of infected premises and by quarantine measures. It has never recurred. This disease is nationally notifiable in Australia. It is not present in Australian wildlife.
