Media article: Popular discussion of CSIRO AAHL and the Australian Biosecurity CRC's work on West Nile virus (WNV) and Australian birds. The study found that Little Ravens were relatively resistent to the New York strain of WNV and Kunjin virus, meaning that they could not be used as early warning sentinels for the presence of WNV in Australia. Cassie Jansen, along with UQ and QLD Health is currently undertaking a risk assessment for WNV in eastern Australia. This project is funded by the AB-CRC and is one of many projects with wildlife health implications (See: http://www1.abcrc.org.au/pages/Education.aspx?MenuID=30#top.) Another project "Immunological methods to detect exotic virulent strains of West Nile virus", also funded by the CRC is also underway (See: http://www1.abcrc.org.au/pages/Education.aspx?MenuID=30#top.) Sheryl Maher, with UQ is also looking at multiplex macro-array based identification of flaviviruses.

West Nile virus (WNV) is an exotic disease in Australia. We would encourage consideration and exclusion of this disease in any wild dead bird clusters in our region. Please forward results of any testing to your local coordinator.
